Dicentrarchus labrax
FISH SPECIES
Meet selected fish of the Mediterranean Sea, where high salinity, clear waters and narrow continental shelves shape marine communities.
01 / NATURAL HISTORY
The semi-enclosed Mediterranean Sea is characterized by elevated salinity, oligotrophic (nutrient-poor) clear waters and a high proportion of endemic taxa mixed with Atlantic temperate species and modern Lessepsian migrants from the Red Sea.
02 / LIFESTYLE
Demersal species like striped red mullet probe sandy substrates using articulate paired chin barbels to locate buried infauna; sparids (breams) employ robust molariform dentition to crush hard-shelled mollusks over rocky bottoms; and pelagic sea bass patrol transitional estuarine and coastal surf zones, striking schooling forage fish during dawn and dusk light changes.

04 / FIELD NOTES
High evaporation rates under the hot Mediterranean climate, combined with limited freshwater river inflow and a narrow exchange point through the Strait of Gibraltar, create higher salinity levels across the basin.
They are tropical marine species that have entered the eastern Mediterranean from the Red Sea via the man-made Suez Canal since 1869, progressively altering regional community compositions.
