FISH SPECIES
Discover species with plant- or algae-based diets, playing critical ecological roles in controlling vegetation and reef turf.
01 / NATURAL HISTORY
Herbivorous fish display specialized feeding adaptations including chisel-like teeth, pharyngeal grinding mills, and elongated, highly coiled digestive tracts sometimes exceeding several times their total body length.
02 / LIFESTYLE
Unlike carnivores that rest between infrequent kills, herbivores feed almost constantly during daylight to sustain their metabolic needs on nutrient-sparse plant matter. On tropical reefs, surgeonfishes and parrotfishes scrape fine algal films off dead coral skeletons, preventing macroalgae from suffocating live polyps, while freshwater grass carp consume enormous masses of submerged vascular plants, cycling nutrients across river channels.

04 / FIELD NOTES
By constantly grazing on fast-growing turf and macroalgae, herbivorous fishes like surgeonfish and parrotfish prevent algae from smothering living coral polyps, creating clean substrate for new coral larvae to settle.
Many species possess pharyngeal mills (toothed structures deep in the throat) or ingest sand to mechanically crush fibrous plant cells, while maintaining specialized gut microbiomes for fermentation.
