Africa: Cavally River in Ivory Coast and River Cess (or Nuon) and Saint John in Liberia. Previously, two subspecies were recognized: Sarotherodon tournieri liberiensis and Sarotherodon tournieri tournieri . Known only from the River Cess (or Nipoué) in Liberia.
