- North America: Mackenzie, Saskatchewan, and Lake Winnipeg drainages in Canada; Missouri-Mississippi River basin from southern Alberta in Canada and Montana to Louisiana, USA; Arkansas River drainage in USA; and upper Rio Grande (including Pecos) drainage in New Mexico, USA. Two subspecies usually recognized: Platygobio gracilis gracilis in northern and eastern parts of range, and Platygobio gracilis gulonella in southern and western parts of range.
