Merluccius tasmanicus is a species of fish from the family Merlucciidae from the western Pacific and south-eastern Pacific and south-western Atlantic which was described in 2006. It is however considered to be synonymous with Merluccius australis by some authorities.

Distribution: Western Pacific: Japan and New Zealand. Southeast Pacific and Southwest Atlantic: Patagonian, Chilean and Argentine waters. Based on the geographical distance between the populations and some morphometric and meristic differences observed, assigning a subspecific name to each of these populations seems appropriate.
